The Belt and Road Initiative Grows Greener: A Green Revolution in Public Transport Unfolds in Medan, Indonesia
A quiet yet profound green revolution is taking place in Medan, Indonesia. To improve the city’s public transportation and respond to global calls for energy efficiency and carbon reduction, the Medan Transportation Authority recently procured 60 high-end pure electric buses from Higer Bus. This project marks Medan’s first large-scale pure electric bus initiative and represents Indonesia's largest single-brand bus procurement. It serves as a significant model for other regions across the country. This groundbreaking step is not only a major upgrade in Medan’s public transportation history but also a key milestone in Indonesia’s transit development.
On November 24, 2024, a grand ceremony was held at Merdeka Square to commemorate the delivery and commissioning of the 60 Higer pure electric buses. The event was attended by Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution, officials from the Medan Transportation Authority, and Jiang Haifeng, General Manager of Overseas Sales at Suzhou King Long. Excited local residents also gathered in large numbers to witness this historic moment. During the event, Mayor Bobby Nasution officially announced the buses’ entry into service, and the Transportation Authority distributed 4,500 bus cards to facilitate easy access for residents.
Mayor Bobby Nasution emphasized that green transportation is essential for a city’s sustainable development. The 60 pure electric buses purchased for this project deliver zero emissions, significantly enhancing residents’ quality of life while contributing positively to environmental conservation. He also announced that Medan will transition its entire public transportation system to pure electric buses, making it the only city in Indonesia to achieve 100% electric public transport.
This successful implementation of Medan’s pure electric bus project has greatly improved local public transit services. The buses primarily serve six core routes, radiating from Merdeka Square in the city center and connecting to key train stations. These eco-friendly, comfortable, and convenient electric buses provide Medan’s residents with an efficient and sustainable mode of transportation, ushering the city into a new era of green mobility.
